Road signs and markings

Additional road signs

A-Boards

We have an A-Board policy for Chester City Centre due to the number of requests received. More information can be found on our A-Board page.

Housing development signs

If you want to put temporary signs on a road to a new housing development, you need to arrange this through a signage company. The appointed company will then be required to contact us for approval to work on the road.

Event signs (temporary)

If you want to put temporary signs on a road to direct people to an organised event, in the first instance, you will need to arrange this through our events team. As part of this process, the Highways team would assess and approve any temporary event signs that was to be placed on the roads.

Tourist Signs

We have a tourism signing policy which explains in detail the application process and the associated costs.

Town And Village Boundary signs

We can consider the request to provide boundary signs for town and parish councils.

The signs are located on the entrances to the town or village and a road safety message can be incorporated.

Boundary signs are funded by town or parish councils which they own and ask the highways team for permission to place on the highway. If you like to request a new boundary sign, please contact your town or parish councils.

Speed limit repeater signs

Repeater signs in 30mph roads are not permitted where there is a system of street lighting as detailed in the Highway Code.

Vehicle activated signs

Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) can be considered if there are local evidenced concerns with speeding. These signs provide a reminder to motorists of their speed or to give them warning of a potential hazard ahead.

There is no allocated funding for the provision of Vehicle Activated Signs. In the first instance, please contact your local Councillor or Town and Parish Council to seek their support as they would need to fund these signs. Please see link for details of how to contact your local Councillor or Town and Parish Council.

An assessment would need to be undertaken to see any proposed location would be suitable for vehicle activated signs based on recorded speed and collision data. More information can be found on our road safety pages.
