Road signs and markings

Road markings

Worn or faded road markings

Road markings are an important part of the highway and provide important information to road users.

We monitor the condition of road markings as part of our routine highway safety inspections and will prioritise 'Stop' and 'Give Way' markings on a risk based assessment.

We will repaint other road makings when they become worn or faded but these will be considered on safety risk and allocated funding. Road marking will generally only be re-painted if the condition is a risk to public safety.

If you feel that there is a risk to public safety, please report it to us.

Report it

There are many different types of road markings used on the road:

  • Directional arrows
  • Lane markings
  • Yellow box junctions
  • Stop / Give Way lines
  • Parking restrictions

Further information about road markings and traffic signs can found in the Gov.UK “Know your Traffic Signs” document.

Request new road markings

Any new request for road markings will need to be assessed based on risk to public safety and whether it is felt that these will be an improvement for users of the highway. The assessment will take into consideration their safety risk priority and allocated funding.

Please note that for new road markings requests, works are collated together so that we can provide value for money but this may delay the timescales for them to be arranged.
