Starting well
Starting well for primary school age
5 -19 healthy child programme (previously known as the Health and Wellbeing Service) - starting well nurses
This service used to be called School Nursing. Starting Well Nurses are Specialist Public Health Practitioners who have expertise in child development and family health. All children and young people aged 5-19 years (up to 25 years SEND) have a Starting Well Nurse. They used to be called School Nurses but we no longer call them that as they now work with anyone up to 19 years. The team have lots of specialist experience in working with young people to promote health-wellbeing, and good lifestyle choices.·
Immunisations and vaccinations programme
Starting Well Nurses lead this programme. They give immunisations to protect young people from illnesses such as flu, meningitis, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and other preventable diseases.
National child measurement programme
Starting Well Nurses lead this programme. All reception and year six children will be weighed and measured as part of the national child measurement programme with families being offered additional support around diet and physical activity if needed.·
Child health review
Reception age children will receive a health questionnaire for the parent/carer to complete and return to the service. The Starting Well Nurses lead these reviews. This is all about the child’s health and development providing an opportunity to identify any additional needs.
If you have any questions about the Starting Well Service please contact your local team, details of which can be found on the Starting Well page of this website.
