Direct Payments
What can Direct Payments be used for?
Direct Payments can help you live a more independent and fulfilling life. People use their payments for:
- help with daily activities like cleaning, shopping, or cooking
- support to get out and about, meet friends, or attend appointments
- personal care such as washing, dressing, and other day-to-day needs
- activities to improve your wellbeing, like swimming, fitness classes, or learning new skills
- equipment and tools to make life easier, such as assistive technology or mobility aids
You can get Direct Payments if you:
- have been assessed by the council as needing support under the Care Act 2014 (including a Financial Assessment)
- are willing to take responsibility for managing the money
- have the ability (or a trusted person to help you) to arrange your care
We will work with you to:
- understand your care needs through a conversation or assessment. More information can be found on our How to get support page.
- Check what money you might need to contribute (a Financial Assessment will decide this). More information can be found on our Financial assessment calculator page.
Carers
If you’re a carer, you can also get Direct Payments to support you in your caring role. This follows a Carer’s Assessment. See our Having a care assessment page for more information.
