Travel assistance
Travel assistance
We provide travel assistance to children, young people and adults who are eligible for support under the relevant policies. We offer multiple different travel assistance options:
Independent Travel Training (SEN and Adults)
Independent Travel Training supports individuals to get more out of life through learning the skills and confidence to travel safely on their own. It is a free service offered to children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), and adults with a learning disability and/or autism, who are eligible for travel assistance and can access a suitable public transport route. More information can be found on the LiveWell Independent Travel Training page.
Cash Grants (Mainstream)
Cash grants are available to support travel assistance for eligible children without an EHCP or disability.
Cash grants are paid at 23p per mile for the four journeys a day that would be involved in taking your child to and from school.
The grant can be spent however you choose, as long as your child travels in a way that ensures their safety and encourages their attendance, and they arrive at school on time and in a positive manner ready to learn. This could include covering the cost of driving a child, supporting the purchase of a bike, or arranging with other parents for shared travel, such as shared driving responsibilities, walking buses or joint taxi bookings.
More information can be found on our Cash Grants page.
Personal Travel Budgets (SEN)
Personal Travel Budget (PTB) is an option of travel assistance available to parents whose children have an Education, Health and Care Plan, (EHCP). It assists with the costs of taking children to school or college. Children have to be assessed as being eligible to receive travel assistance before they can receive a PTB. More information can be found on our Personal Travel Budget page.
Bus Pass
If your child is assessed as eligible, they will usually be offered a pass to use on either a contracted service or a public bus. However, you may also be offered one of the following:
- Rail card (a photo will be required for their ID)
- Cycle allowance
- Cash Grant (see above)
If the child lives at two different addresses, we will only provide travel assistance to one address. Parents must choose one of the addresses as the permanent address for the purposes of school travel assistance and school admissions. More information about bus passes can be found on our School Transport FAQ's page.
Community Transport (for adults)
Community Transport is for residents who are unable to access conventional public transport, including residents attending day centres. More information can be found on our Community Transport page.
