Chester Rows fire protection

The Council is committed to conserving the rich heritage in Chester City Centre.

The fire protection on Chester's Rows is being upgraded, to provide an 'early warning' in the event of a fire. Charles Thomas Heritage Fire Protection Specialists have been appointed, they provide innovative fire protection solutions to the heritage sector; they will be working alongside Heritage Architects, Donald Insall Associates, Heritage Contractor, Recclesia, and a number of other consultants.

The full installation is scheduled for completion by summer 2024. Charles Thomas will test and commission the system, ready for handover.

Phase one

The upgrade will start in December 2023 and will run for a number of months, with works split into two phases. The first phase will be the least intrusive, with little to no disruption of the day-to-day activities on the rows, working on the elevated Stallboard areas, away from businesses and footpaths, upgrading the necessary equipment in the existing Fire Alarm Panel enclosures.

Phase two

The second phase will see the team install the new sampling pipework, which runs high-level along the Rows with the majority being above the elevated Stallboards. Carefully planned closures for footpaths and diversions will be implemented for the small percent of the works which will require the team to work in a public walkway area.
