Road safety schemes

Road safety schemes are designed to improve safety at locations where collisions have occurred leading to injuries.

We consider data from injury collisions from across the whole network to prioritise the road safety schemes undertaken within the allocated budget.

We investigate sites with the following number of collisions over a three year period:

  • All collision types – four or more within 100 metres
  • Pedestrians – two or more within 100 metres
  • Cyclists – two or more within 100 metres
  • Motorcycles – two or more within 100 metres
  • Serious and fatal injuries – two or more within 100 metres
  • Dark / No street lighting – two or more within 100 metres
  • Wet skids – two or more within 100 metres
  • Red light – one or more fatal or serious and history injuries due to red light running

For the 2024/25 programme, we investigated over 60 sites with four or more collisions.
