Winnington Bridge Corridor
The Council is committed to improving the area around Winnington Bridge in Northwich on behalf of residents, businesses and visitors. The Winnington Bridge Corridor project includes proposals to provide a replacement for the single-track Grade II Listed Bridge over the River Weaver, building a new, two-way structure to the west of the current bridge, converting the existing bridge to a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists and providing improvements at several junctions along Winnington Lane to Northwich town centre.
These improvements will alleviate a key pinch point which causes significant congestion across the area, making travel times by car or bus more reliable for residents and visitors. It will also improve the environment for cyclists and walkers and ensure that the transport network can cope with new housing and business growth in the local area, enhancing economic prosperity for people in nearby towns and the wider sub-region.
The Council agreed £1 million to progressing plans that will support future plans for Winnington Bridge Corridor. It also submitted a Levelling up Fund (LUF) bid for £45.8m in August 2022 to facilitate the project, with the Council’s preferred option being confirmed at Cabinet on 14 September 2022.
Despite a strong business case submitted as part of the LUF bid, an announcement was made by the Government on 18 January 2023 that the project was not successful in securing this funding.
The Council remains firm in its commitment to improving the borough’s transport infrastructure and will continue to liaise closely with the Department for Transport and work closely with partners regionally and on a sub-regional level on identifying opportunities for alternative funding to deliver the much-needed investment for Northwich to deliver a solution on behalf of local people, businesses and visitors.
