Food safety for consumers
Food and food hygiene complaints
We investigate food complaints as part of our role to protect public health, as well as complaints about hygiene standards in food businesses such as poor hygiene practices or sightings of food pests.
If you think you have food poisoning caused by food from a food business in the borough, make an appointment with your GP and ask for a stool sample to be submitted for laboratory analysis. You can contact our Food Safety team on 0300 123 7038 to provide us with details of the food consumed, business name and dates of illness. Please note that until sample results are received any case will be classed as ‘suspected’ food poisoning.
What types of complaints do we deal with?
We deal with complaints that pose a public health risk, such as food that:
- is not safe to eat or actually makes you ill
- is so contaminated that it could not reasonably be eaten
- contains a foreign object (such as a fragment of glass in a loaf of bread)
Please note: we won't get involved in compensation claims as they are a civil matter that must be taken up with the manufacturer and, if necessary, go to court. For complaints where the risk to the public is low, details will be logged for information purposes.
