Skip licence

Conditions

To ensure the safety of the public and users we set the following conditions when issuing a licence:

  • location – this should not be placed on or within 10 metres of a road junction, near a pedestrian crossing or on a busy road. In addition the skip should be placed so that road visibility is not impaired such as on a bend
  • the size and shape of skip – maximum length, width and height of 10 metres
  • signing, lighting and barriers – all skips located on the highway should be signed and illuminated so they are clearly visible and safe. In busy areas they might need to be within barriers. If the skip hire company doesn’t use the required safety lights and markings, you could be fined up to £1,000
  • you need to display the name and telephone number of the skip hire company at all times
  • you will also be required to provide evidence of Public Liability Insurance to cover up to £5,000,000. Public Liability Insurance covers third party claims against your business for injury or damage.
  • a maximum duration may be set dependant on the location
