People across the country and the Commonwealth are invited to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort over a weekend of special events. The Coronation takes place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey in London.

On Sunday 7 May, there will be community Big Lunches to celebrate the Coronation. Monday 8 May will be a day dedicated to good causes and aims to bring communities together throughout the UK over the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend.

There are events across the borough including a live stream of the Coronation, a special service at Chester Cathedral, Big Lunch, The Lord Mayor of Chester Coronation concert, brass band concert and parades.

Join the Lord Mayor of Chester to celebrate the King and Queen Consort’s Coronation. A free concert of local performers, choirs and children will take place on Chester Town Hall square celebrating the historic event on Sunday 7 May from 1.15pm until 2.45pm.

Roads around Chester Town Hall will be closed to the public on Sunday 7 May. There will be a suspension of parking, loading and unloading from Storyhouse to St Johns Street from 8am until 3.30pm. There will be road closures on Northgate Street at 10.30am (Town Hall Square) and by Storyhouse starting at 11.30am.

This will prevent parking on St Werburgh Street and Eastgate Street for blue badges. Alternative parking for blue badges is located at Kaleyards car park, Hamilton Place and to the north end of Northgate Street. In addition, parking is available at Trinity Street carpark, Delamere Street carpark and the New Market carpark.

The best way to visit Chester over the holiday weekend is using Park & Ride with frequent services from Upton, Wrexham Road and Boughton Heath running Saturday: 8am to 7pm and Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday: 9.30am to 5.30pm.

Chester Cathedral – livestream of the Coronation

There will be a livestream of the BBC’s coverage of The Coronation at Chester Cathedral starting at 11.15am. Tickets must be booked in advance.

Sunday 7 May 11am
Chester Cathedral - ‘A Celebration of His Majesty King Charles III’

There is a service at Chester Cathedral, pre booked ticket holders are asked to be seated by 10.30am. After this time, seats will be released to walk-ins. Seating is un-allocated and will operate on a first come first served basis. There will be bag check in operation.

Chester Cathedral - Coronation Picnic Boxes

Pre order your Coronation Picnic box from the Cathedral. Once booked, the picnic can be collected from the Cathedral Refectory, from 12pm onwards.

All boxes will include a selection of mixed sandwiches, a cream scone and cake. Each box serves one person, and one tea / coffee will be available per box.

The picnic boxes can be ordered by everyone, not just those attending the service. Reserving picnic boxes in advance is required from the Cathedral.

Chester Town Hall Square – Lord Mayor of Chester’s Coronation Concert

Join the Lord Mayor of Chester to celebrate the King and Queen Consort’s Coronation. A free concert of local performers, choirs and children will take place on Chester Town Hall square celebrating the historic event.

The Lord Mayor will open the concert and welcome everyone, the afternoon will include performances from A Handbag Of Harmonies; University Of Chester Choir; Dee Sign Choir; Chester Male Voice Choir; Overleigh St Mary’s School; Proud Marys; Rock Choir; Amasing. The concert closes with all the choirs joining together for the Lambeth Walk and National Anthem.

Malpas – Parade, Fun Run, Country Fayre

In Malpas there will be a parade and a traditional country fayre with free entry. There is a Fun Run on Monday 8 May (£5 entry), a Treasure hunt and afternoon tea.

Monday 8 May noon until 6pm
Helsby Village centre - Community Coronation Celebration

Free event with shops, artisan crafts, food and drink, music and performances, children's attractions, face painting, giants, maypole and Morris dancers.

Monday 8 May 12.30 to 4pm
Ashton Hayes recreation ground - Big Lunch

Including a decorated wheelbarrow parade and race, a tug of war and beacon lighting.
