How to vote in a General Election
If you are already registered to vote, you will receive a poll card before election day. This will give details of your polling station.
If you are not registered to vote, you will need to register. The deadline to register to vote in these elections is midnight on Tuesday 18 June 2024. The quickest way to register is online.
Voting by post
If you cannot attend the polling station on election day, you can apply to vote by post.
The deadline for us to receive your completed application is 5pm Wednesday 19 June 2024.
If you have a permanent postal vote or applied before 31 May 2024 your postal vote should arrive on or around 18 June 2024 if it is being sent to a UK address. If your postal vote is being sent to address outside the UK please note it will rely on local postal services and these delivery times can vary.
If you apply for a postal vote after 31 May 2024 through until the deadline of 19 June your postal vote should arrive on or around 27 June 2024 if it is being sent to a UK address. If your postal vote is being sent to address outside the UK please note it will rely on local postal services and these delivery times can vary.
The earliest date we can re-issue a lost or spoilt postal vote is 28 June.
If you are due to be away and the above dates cause you concerns you may wish to consider applying for a proxy vote instead, the details of how to do this are given below.
Candidate nominations closed at 16:00 on Friday 7 June, so ballot papers could only be finalised and sent to print after that.
Due to the short notice for the 4 July UK Parliamentary General Election, specialist election printers and Royal Mail are working at capacity to print and deliver over 8 million postal votes across the UK.
It’s a complicated process, with personalised postal vote statements matched with the correct ballot paper. There is also a need to produce personalised envelopes and instruction sheets. We also need to carry out crucial security checks which add to the time needed to prepare and send votes out.
Postal votes for overseas electors have early priority because of the extra time it takes for international mail to be delivered and returned.
If you applied for a postal vote and don’t think you’ll be home in time to get it to us via post by 10pm on Thursday 4 July 2024, you can drop your completed postal vote pack in to your polling station on the day of the election. You must complete a form when you hand it in.
If you have not applied for and don’t currently have a Postal Vote you can appoint a Proxy to vote on your behalf.
You must:
- make a proxy application by 5pm on Wednesday 26 June
- the person you appoint as a proxy must:
- be a registered parliamentary elector who can vote in this election.
- only be a proxy for up to two electors living in the UK, plus up to two people living abroad, or up to four people living abroad.
- Your proxy can vote in person on your behalf at your polling station. They will have to show their own accepted form of photo ID to be able to vote
Appointing someone else to vote on your behalf
You can also appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote.
The deadline for us to receive your completed application is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.
Voting if you live outside of the UK
If you live outside the UK, you can register to vote as an overseas elector.
