Flats recycling trial

Following requests from residents, we are helping residents living in flats in Hallwood Walk, Lowland Court, St Edmonds House , St Catherines House and St Johns House in Ellesmere Port boost their recycling.

A new trial will both highlight the need for recycling and work with residents to increase the amount they recycle, while also reducing the amount of fly-tipped or dumped waste in their area. Residents were provided with a ‘Flats recycling pack’ which included information about what can be recycled, where larger items can be recycled and where their nearest recycling centre is.

New food waste caddies and handy recycling bags were also given to tenants to make it easier for them to take their recycling to the bin stores. Also, the bin stores have been fitted out with new signage, lighting and hand sanitiser.

'Tree-cycled' in Chester Cathedral

We supported the ‘Christmas Tree-cycled’ event at Chester Cathedral which involved over 50 Christmas trees decorated with creative recycled decorations.

Our Recycle First team sponsored a tree and decorated it with decorations made from previous waste collection calendars, plastic bottles, cans, paper, twigs and fabric.

In pride of place at the very top of the tree is an angel made from a recycled book donated by our Libraries Service. ‘Joy the Angel’ was made from a statistics book by a librarian in Neston Library.

Festive recycling tips:

• remove all packaging from cardboard boxes such as plastic wrapping and polystyrene and flatten before recycling
• remove ribbons, bows and other adornments before recycling wrapping paper and do the scrunch test on foil wrapping paper - the scrunch test involves screwing up discarded wrapping paper and checking whether it holds the shape, if the paper remains scrunched it can be recycled; if it unfurls or springs back it needs to go into your black bin.
• remove all food from card and paper packaging and rinse plastic packaging and tins before recycling
• recycle your christmas tree lights in your green box

The Great British clean up 2019

We organised a range of clean-up events across the borough to support Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Great British Spring Clean’. The campaign encourages individuals and community groups to get involved in giving their neighbourhoods a spring clean.

Litter-pick events took place near the River Weaver in Winsford and the River Dee in Chester organised by our waste management and StreetCare teams, along with our waste contractor. Volunteers bagged up litter and placed cans, bottles and other plastics in separate white bags, so we can recycle as much of the collected material possible.
