Private boat licences
Every privately owned powered boat must be registered before use.
How to apply
To apply for a daily, weekly or annual boat licence or to renew your current boat licence you can apply using our online form. You will need to attach a photograph or scanned copy of your boat insurance.
If you have not already done so, you will need to register for an account.
When making your application you must ensure that all the data entered is correct, if data is entered incorrectly the application will be rejected and will need to be resubmitted.
Daily boat licence
A daily boat licence can also be purchased from The Chester Boat Hire Staff at the river bank at The Groves, Chester, CH1 1SD. However, they do have limited operation hours which are seasonal and weather dependent.
You will need to provide the following to be able to purchase a licence:
- Your name, address, the boat name, your boat insurance details, the date you want the licence for and a contact phone number to make a card payment.

The fee for a first registration is £87.

Parking
Please note: a four-hour maximum stay applies to vehicles parked at Sandy Lane car park. Licence holders can obtain a permit to allow parking for over four hours and the following charges apply:
- Day/Weekly licences - free for up to four hours, £2.50 for over four hours
- Weekly licences – free for up to four hours, £10.50 is payable for a parking pass for the week
- Annual Licence holders may purchase an annual parking pass for £22.50 (runs concurrent with annual licence)
