Mapping the network

We have a duty to keep the map up-to-date. The legal record of public rights of way includes footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways and byways open to all traffic. If a path is shown on the Definitive Map it is a public right of way. Please note, there may be other public rights of way or higher rights existing which are unrecorded and about which we have no knowledge.

There is a legal process whereby the public may apply to claim additional rights of way, add, amend or delete a right of way. This sort of application has to be based on evidence such as documentary evidence or statements from people who have used the route. Contact the public rights of way service for more information.

We investigate any application to amend the record, for example, to add or delete rights of way or to update the record when the status has altered and where there have been legal changes to it, for example to divert a path.
