The Care Act 

The Care Act 2014 outlines the eligibility for people to access care and support from adult social care, putting people and their carers in control of their care and support. It aims to ensure the well-being of people in need of care and support services, and sets out a legal framework for safeguarding adults at risk of abuse or neglect

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA)

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) is a law that protects and empowers people who may lack the mental capacity to make their own decisions about their care and treatment. It covers how to assess, support and make decisions for people who lack capacity, and how to avoid restricting their rights and freedoms.

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) 

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) are designed to protect the rights of individuals who lack mental capacity and are deprived of their liberty due to care or treatment in a hospital or care home, they provide a process for scrutinising and authorising a deprivation of someone’s liberty.

The Mental Health Act 1983

The Mental Health Act 1983 is a law that outlines the circumstances under which individuals with mental illness or mental disorder can be assessed, treated, cared for, and supported. It is commonly used when a person is unable to make their own decisions about treatment or when they need treatment, care, and support even if they do not want it.

 The Mental Health Act is currently being reformed.

The Human Rights Act 1998

The Human Rights Act 1998 gives you legal protection of your human rights, such as your right to life and right to respect for your private and family life. There are 16 rights and each right is referred to as a separate article. The Act sets out a minimum standard of how the government should treat you. It makes sure that they think about meeting your basic rights when they do their job.

The Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 is the law that protects you from discrimination. It also gives you the right to challenge discrimination. You’re protected by the Equality Act if you have certain protected characteristics.
