Council Tax and empty properties
Overview
Council Tax applies to all properties, and if a home is unoccupied, the owner is responsible for paying it. If you own multiple properties, you may be liable for Council Tax on each one. The Council Tax you pay helps fund local services in your area.
Depending on the situation, your empty property may:
- be charged at the standard council tax rate
- be subject to a premium - higher council tax for long-term empty or second homes (Exceptions to premiums are available)
- qualify for a Council Tax exemption (meaning no Council Tax is due)
Please note that from 1 April 2025, the 25% uninhabitable property discount has been withdrawn and therefore any discount will only be granted until 31 March 2025.
