Markets celebrate International Women’s Day
The Council’s four markets across the borough at Chester, Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford will be shining a spotlight on the incredible women who power our local markets.
Both as traders and as part of the markets’ management team, their contribution is critical to the success of each market.
From everyday essentials to handmade gifts produce, street food and clothes, these women are more than traders and staff – they are the beating heart of our communities and work hard to help make our markets more than just places to shop.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day on 8 March is Accelerate Action
Which aims to raise awareness of the need to promote women’s economic empowerment, and to support women and girls into leadership, decision-making and starting their own businesses.
Markets provide an ideal opportunity to nurture entrepreneurs and test out new business ideas with low set-up costs and plenty of friendly support and mentoring available from market staff and other traders to help anyone take their first steps into trading.
Our markets include award-winning women traders who have followed their passion and developed thriving businesses from start-up to expanding their offer and employing staff.
Michelle opened her Karmiq stall in Ellesmere Port Market three and a half years ago when she wanted to change direction after working as a hairdresser. Karmiq sells a range of incense, burners, alternative gifts and jewellery. After being unable to sell at festivals during Covid, Michelle combined her online business with a market stall and has not looked back.

Michelle said:
The decision to start my own business was not easy, but I’m so pleased I did; living locally having a market stall gives me the best of both worlds with a shop front and an online business from the same location. I am also really looking forward to the refurbishment of Ellesmere Port Market this year which will offer opportunities for more women traders to join us and welcome new customers to the market.
