Growth Track 360 welcomes Welsh Government’s appointment of Lord Burns to lead North Wales Transport Review
Business and local authority leaders from North Wales, the Wirral and Cheshire West and Chester in the Growth Track 360 partnership have welcomed the announcement from Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Climate Change, to lead a review of transport schemes in North Wales.
Business and local authority leaders from North Wales, the Wirral and Cheshire West and Chester in the Growth Track 360 partnership have welcomed the announcement from Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Lee Waters MS, of the appointment of Lord Terry Burns to lead a review of transport schemes in North Wales.
The transport commission for North Wales will develop a pipeline of schemes for North Wales in the light of advice from the Welsh Government’s Roads Review panel accepted by the Welsh Government to cancel current plans for junction improvements to the A55. The new commission will follow the model of the similar body led by Lord Burns for South Wales following the cancellation of the M4 Relief Road.
The commission will also take account of the recommendation in Sir Peter Hendy’s recent Union Connectivity Review undertaken for the UK Government for a multi-modal review of the A55 corridor linking North Wales and North West England.

Sir Peter Hendy’s Union Connectivity Review carried out for the UK Government recognised North Wales and North West England as a highly integrated cross-border economy whilst supporting a programme of transport improvements. The new Burns Commission for North Wales complements these findings and provides a further platform from which to build support and funding for the package of rail, bus and active travel schemes Growth Track 360 has developed. It is critical that we develop viable and effective sustainable transport alternatives to cars and HGVs.

Following the cancellation of the M4 Relief Road, Lord Terry Burns recommended a game-changing package of improvements to bus, rail and active travel in South Wales which is now on the way to implementation. We look forward to supporting Lord Burns and his team by showcasing our ready-to-go plans for active travel and bus improvements in North Wales along with our cross-border package of rail investments on the North Wales Main Line, the Wrexham-Bidston line and at Shotton and Chester stations.
