Cabinet asked to approve appointing development partner for Weaver Square regeneration and relocation of Northwich Market
The Council’s Cabinet will be asked to give the go ahead to begin the process of appointing a development partner for Weaver Square and approve the relocation of Northwich Market to Barons Quay at the Cabinet meeting of 31 July.
As a vital part of the Northwich Development Framework, the proposal for Weaver Square is to replace empty shops and buildings, and deliver modern and affordable sustainable town centre living, as part of a mixed-use development with public spaces and supporting infrastructure. It is hoped that the new community will support existing businesses, help to attract new investment, and give a welcome boost to the town centre and the evening economy.
As part of the plans for Weaver Square, Cabinet is asked to approve the relocation of Northwich Market to the currently vacant corner units opposite H&M at Barons Quay. This would allow for a new modern market including an alfresco area, traditional market stalls and food and drink options. The Council are talking to existing market traders about the future options.
If the recommendation is approved by Cabinet, the process to bring in an experienced development partner for Weaver Square will begin. Designs will then be developed, taking on board the views of town centre stakeholders. Securing a development partner will enable the Council to set a brief for Weaver Square, and to work with the development partner to secure a high-quality development, whilst keeping an element of control over the final scheme. The development of Weaver Square is expected to start in 2026.
Services based within Northwich Information Centre will also be relocated within the town centre prior to works starting in Weaver Square.

The plans for Weaver Square will continue the transformation of Northwich Town Centre, demonstrating that Cheshire West & Chester Council is committed to regenerating town centres across the Borough. They will create a new residential community living in the town, supporting the businesses trading there. There’s good news about Northwich Market as well, which will relocate to Barons Quay to become a new market fit for the future. As a modern yet traditional market, it will help traders to thrive and attract new visitors to Northwich, and the Council is working with traders to make the plans a success. The Council is proud of its markets, and these ambitious plans are part of the work it is doing to transform the Borough’s other markets in Ellesmere Port and Winsford following the success of Chester Market.
