A successful partnership between Cheshire West and Chester Council’s building control team and Chester Zoo has won national recognition.

The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards Grand Final took place last week and the winner of the Best Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team award was Chester Zoo with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The awards highlight the key role of public sector building control teams in ensuring the safety, quality, and sustainability of construction projects, showcasing the sector’s commitment to excellence and innovation.

A panel of expert judges carefully reviewed a diverse range of projects, professionals, and teams, recognising their invaluable contributions to the industry.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Homes, Planning and Safer Communities, Councillor Christine Warner said:

I’m delighted that the work of our building control team has been recognised.

This is a fantastic achievement. The LABC awards recognise excellent building and design and celebrate the results that can be achieved by designers, contractors and clients working closely with their local authority building control team.

Chester Zoo and Cheshire West and Chester Council building control have worked together for many years to create safe, unique spaces within the zoo, including restaurants, cafes, event spaces, educational hubs, and staff facilities.

One recent flagship project we worked together on was The Square – the highly successful renovation of a Grade II listed stable block into our incredible new wedding and events venue. It’s fantastic to receive national recognition for this project, not least because every occasion it hosts contributes to the zoo’s charitable mission to secure a brighter future for wildlife.

The building control team has played a key role in guiding Chester Zoo through design and compliance, helping to avoid design errors and ensuring building regulations were met. Thanks to timely support from building control, projects were completed on time to support the zoo's vital conservation efforts.
