Bike Week 30 May - 5 June 2021
Bike Week is an annual celebration delivered by Cycling UK to showcase cycling and how brilliant it is. This year it takes place between 30 May and 5 June and thousands of people across the UK are set to get involved and enjoy the simple pleasure of riding a bike.
Cycling is a great option for short journeys and can help to reduce both your personal carbon footprint and carbon emissions in the borough. Alongside the environmental benefits, cycling also has lots of health benefits with Cycling UK noting that if you cycle regularly in adulthood, you will enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger.
Throughout the year the Council’s Road Safety Team promote cycling, alongside other active forms of travel, and organise cycle training for pupils at local schools which is delivered by our cycle training partner BikeRight! The organisation also delivers some adult and family training throughout the year.
One of the 49 schools that has signed up for Bikeability training in the borough this year is Hoole Primary School. Their Year 6 pupils started their Bikeability level 1 and 2 courses recently, which will help to prepare them for their commutes to high school in September.
The course teaches pupils to cycle safely and responsibly, to identify and respond to hazards, how to start and stop on-road journeys, how to share the road with other users and how to negotiate road junctions safely.
Rosalind Flander, Headteacher at Hoole Church of England Primary School, said: "Children have benefited immensely from the sessions with the BikeRight instructors. The instructing team have shown patience and skill extending children’s competence, knowledge of road safety and cycling proficiency. Pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the course and have grown in confidence as a result of the experience they have gained. This has been a wonderful opportunity to support children’s personal development and to prepare them for future life."
Any families interested in their child completing a Bikeability course should enquire with their school. Schools in west Cheshire can request free Bikeability training by contacting BikeRight!
Whatever your age or experience of cycling, there are lots of activities planned throughout Bike Week to get you in the saddle and having fun. Visit the Bike Week website for more information.
