Inspections and risk assessment

Inspections

All inspections are risk based and targeted mainly at higher risk operations or the more risky elements of other businesses to limit the burden on businesses. All interventions are delivered in line with Health and Safety Guidance to Local Authorities and our Enforcement Policy.

Most business operators report finding our interventions helpful and supportive of their business activity.

Inspections are generally conducted unannounced and in addition to assessing legal compliance the officer will offer guidance on best practice and provide leaflets and other support materials.

Specific risk areas are targeted for inspection in accordance with Health and Safety Executive Initiatives for example slips and trips, workplace transport, musculoskeletal disorders and falls from height.

Risk assessments

A risk assessment is nothing more than a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people (both employees and customers or visitors), so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm.

More information and guidance about risk assessment can be found on the Health and Safety Executive website.
