Waste management strategy
To respond to the challenges of Climate Change we all must do everything we can to make our waste collection services more environmentally sustainable. We are also facing unprecedented pressure on our budgets, which means we need to identity where we can make savings so that we can continue to deliver the services people in our borough rely upon.
In January 2021, we consulted with residents about providing robust waste management services fit for the future.
The new strategy was debated and approved by the Full Council at a special meeting which took place on Tuesday 27 July 2021.
The service is changing to meet the three priorities of:
- reducing overall waste
- maximising recycling
- delivering an efficient and cost-effective waste collection, recycling and processing service.
More information on the final strategy can be found on ParticipateNow.
Plans for 2022
Recycling collection
Our ambition is to maintain our position as one of the best recycling communities in the country, which requires a continued evolution of the service to meet the ever-changing context and challenges.
From February 2022 new recycling bins will be rolled out across Cheshire West and Chester. More information can be found on our bin collection page.
The changes will also help to reduce carbon emissions by reducing the number of collection vehicles on the roads, and those vehicles will be more efficient and environmentally friendly. The new kerbside collection service is predicted to reduce carbon emissions by around 220,000kg of CO2.
Garden waste collection
From 28 February 2022 residents have a choice to opt-in to the garden waste collection service or make alternative arrangements such as composting at home or taking their waste to the nearest recycling centre. More information can be found on our garden waste page.
Household waste recycling centres (HWRCs)
We are continuing to review all aspects of the Waste and Recycling Service in a bid to provide a more environmentally sustainable, cost-effective model that responds to the needs of our residents.
